Fort Kochi - First European fort on Indian soil

       Fort Kochi is a historic coastal town located in the city of Kochi, in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The area has a rich history and has been influenced by a variety of cultures over the centuries.        Fort Kochi is believed to have been first settled by the Portuguese in the early 1500s. The Portuguese established a trading post and a fort in the area, which they named Fort Kochi. They also built a number of churches, including the famous Santa Cruz Basilica, which still stands today.        The Dutch arrived in Fort Kochi in the late 1600s and took control of the area from the Portuguese. They built the Mattancherry Palace and several other structures, which can still be seen in the town today.
